US to NZ Certification

Importing caravans and motorhomes from the USA is a great way to acquire large temporary accommodation at affordable prices. Due to the volume of manufacturing in the USA, costs of production are less than manufacturing for smaller markets, it can prove to be an effective way to save money rather building the vehicle locally.

What will you have to change, to get certified?

It is important that all appliances meet New Zealand Electrical Standards.

Below are the appliances which will require replacement or attention:
  • TV
  • Air condition
  • Microwave
  • Gas stove
  • Fridge or fridge element
  • Boiler element
  • Battery charger


New Zealand regulations specify that all cables must be rated to 500 volt and be made up from 7 strand wires. American make vehicles rated to 300 volt and are usually have 3 strand wires or less.

Another requirement is that the vehicle must be fitted with a safe system, consisting of a 16 amp RCBO to protect the occupants from electrical shocks.

On the larger vehicles which require more than 16 amp, larger cables may be used and the vehicle can be set up with a 32 amp supply lead and plug. What will you have to change, to get certified?
